Maidens of the Cosmic Body Running is a collaboration between Lisa Siders, Denise Burge, and Jenny Ustick, exploring states of hypnosis and ecstasy, and referencing archaic and contemporary forms of ritual trance. This work seeks to reflect and personify romantic notions about nature, using video not just as a record of experience, but as a substance to induce an ecstatic state. Siders, Burge, and Ustick began working together on Burge’s project The Dozens: Multiply in 2005, creating two of the five original animated music videos (Driveway and I Am The Bomb). In 2008, Siders and Burge began collaborating as Maidens of the Cosmic Body Running on new video works based in the forest, which eventually branched out into the Black Forest Project (2009), joined by Ustick and another member of the Dozens. Finally, in 2010, Ustick joined the Maidens in their exploration of the forest as a theatrical space of reflection and ecstasy. Together they have traveled to use the backdrop of well-managed parks and planted forests to stage rituals immersed in the natural environment, and crafted new environments to share them with viewers.
